Cypress Semiconductor Corporation announces the world's highest throughput dual-port interconnect family. This new FullFlexTM device delivers a maximum throughput of 36 Gbps, which is 50% higher than the closest competitor. They are the first devices in the industry to be fabricated using 90nm process technology.
A FullFlex device can be used both as an interprocessor communication memory and as a single processor companion memory. When used as a companion memory, the device provides 36 Gbps of dedicated memory bandwidth regardless of the system read/write ratio. When used for interprocessor communication, its rich built-in features simplify board design and create the conditions for high-bandwidth data transfers between processors.
With a maximum operating speed of 250MHz, FullFlex devices are the fastest in the industry. The family is said to be the industry's only 72-bit bus-wide dual-port device family that offers easy interoperability with 64-bit processors and includes 36-bit and 18-bit devices. The new FullFlex product offers a density of up to 36Mb and is the only dual-port interconnect with double data rate (DDR) capability, enabling system throughput multiplication while maintaining the same number of existing pins .
The FullFlex family is based on the success of Cypress's previous generations of FLEX family of dual-port devices, which takes a footprint-compatible transition path. This allows former system designers to take advantage of today's rich features. The FullFlex dual-port device was developed using Cypress's 90nm process to achieve lower cost and higher density.
Samples of FullFlex dual-port interconnects with densities ranging from 36Mbit to 0.5Mbit are available now and are expected to be available in April 2006. FullFlex interconnects in a 484-pin PBGA package have a 72-bit bus width, while FullFlex devices in a 256-pin FBGA package have a 36-bit or 18-bit bus width. They can be configured to provide a maximum throughput of 36, 18, 9 or 4 Gbps. For 10,000-piece quantities, 4Mb devices are priced at less than $50.
