To understand the parallel light source, we must first popularize the principle of double telecentric lens.


As shown in the above figure, compared with the ordinary lens, the double telecentric lens has a diaphragm in the center of the lens, so that the light sources entering and exiting the lens are parallel light sources. This feature allows the double telecentric lens has the advantages of large depth of field, ultra-low distortion, the same lens magnification, so in the visual system, it can be used in many detection situations that traditional lenses can not solve, such as the measured object has a certain thickness, The situation beyond the range of depth of field, such as the situation where the uncontrollable jitter of the production line belt affects the accuracy of the measurement system, such as the case where the detection features are partially blocked due to the large and small distances in the conventional detection scheme.

However, the telecentric lens also has problems that cannot be solved. In our project experience, the following problems encountered in the screw (or spring) detection alone cannot be solved with the telecentric lens:

As shown in the figure above, due to the special structure of the screw (spring), when testing its pitch or thread angle, even if a double telecentric lens is used with the backlight source, the corners will be reflected at the corners and adjacent to it. The gray value at the opposite is such that the detection work cannot be performed. In order to solve this problem, we used a double telecentric lens with a parallel light source to perform a test that perfectly solved this problem. The image results are as follows:

It can be seen that the use of parallel light sources does not reflect light when the edges are neat, and the edges and angles can be easily determined.

In the double telecentric system, the parallel light source plays the following irreplaceable role:
