1. Steel Structure Preparation
2. Degreasing
3. Abrasive Selection
4. Sandblasting
**Steel Structure Preparation**
To ensure optimal coating performance, the steel structure must be properly prepared before sandblasting. This includes correcting any imperfections such as air holes, incomplete welds, and sharp edges. Sharp corners and flame-cut edges should be ground to a radius of R ≥ 2 mm. Welds must be smooth, free from spatter, and properly shaped to ensure even coating adhesion.
**Degreasing**
Before blasting, all residual oils or wetting agents from the flaw detection film must be removed using the SSPC-SP1 "solvent cleaning" method. This ensures that no contaminants interfere with the adhesion of the coating.
**Abrasive Selection**
The abrasive used for blasting must be dry, clean, and free of debris to avoid compromising the coating’s quality. The selected abrasive must comply with ISO 11126 standards 1–8 and be tested according to ISO 11127 1–7. River sand is not permitted for sandblasting. The size of the abrasive should be appropriate to achieve the required surface roughness for the specific coating system. Surface roughness is measured in accordance with ISO 8503. During sandblasting, care must be taken to prevent oil or moisture from contaminating the steel surface. The air compressor must be equipped with a water separator. Abrasives can only be reused if approved by the responsible authority.
**Surface Preparation Standards**
The steel surface must be blast-cleaned to ISO 8501-1 Sa? grade with a surface roughness of Rz 50–70 microns, corresponding to a "moderate (G)" grade as defined in ISO 8503-2. After blasting, the surface must remain clean, dry, and free of grease until the first coat of paint is applied. All dust must be thoroughly removed, and the dust level must not exceed 3 on the ISO 8502-3 scale. Painting must be completed within 4 hours after surface preparation to prevent re-rusting or contamination. If the surface shows visible rust, becomes wet, or gets contaminated, it must be re-cleaned to the required standard.
**Surface Treatment for Non-Carbon Steels**
For surfaces made of materials other than carbon steel—such as flanges, galvanized layers, and aluminum—the surface treatment must follow detailed construction guidelines. When painting a galvanized surface, sandblasting is required to ensure proper adhesion.
**Maintenance Work**
In cases of maintenance, the surface must be treated to achieve at least the SSPC SP2 grade using an appropriate method.
