Scientists break the record of photovoltaic cell efficiency

Researchers in Berkeley, California, broke the record of photovoltaic cell efficiency.

In the past 15 years, photovoltaic efficiency has stayed at 23% for a long time, and researchers have improved efficiency to 29% using newly improved scientific concepts, and plan to reach 50% in the near future.

The research report was published in the PNAS journal. The research team discovered in 2011 that the key to improving the efficiency of photovoltaic cells is not to absorb more photons, but to emit photons. By introducing high reflectors on the back of the cells, they broke the record of photovoltaic efficiency at that time.

In the latest research, the researchers found that the reflector can have a dual role, which solves one of the biggest challenges of thermal photovoltaic cells: if you use hot photons with little energy to generate electricity.

The mirror can reflect low-energy photons to reheat the heat source, providing a second opportunity for the generation and generation of high-energy photons, thereby greatly improving the conversion efficiency.
