Proper bearing protection is essential to ensure the longevity and performance of mechanical systems. Whether it's a small or large machine, following the correct procedures during installation, operation, and maintenance can significantly reduce the risk of failure and extend the service life of the bearings.

For smaller machinery, it is recommended to manually rotate the shaft to check if it moves smoothly. This helps identify any issues such as foreign particles, scratches, or indentations that could affect performance. If the rotation feels abnormal, it may indicate problems with the equipment alignment, excessive clearance, or an overly tight seal. If everything appears normal, the power can be turned on.

In the case of larger machines, manual rotation is not always feasible. Therefore, after connecting the power, the machine should be run in an unloaded state to observe its behavior. Listen for any unusual vibrations, noises, or contact between rotating parts. If no abnormalities are detected, the machine can proceed to normal operation. Start at a low speed and gradually increase to the required working conditions. During this process, monitor key factors such as noise levels, temperature changes in TIMKEN imported bearings, signs of lubricant leakage or discoloration, and other potential issues.

Bearing temperature is typically estimated based on the external temperature of the housing. However, for more accurate readings, the temperature of the outer ring can be measured directly using a thermometer inserted into the oil hole. The temperature should gradually rise during initial operation and stabilize after about 1 to 2 hours. If the temperature rises sharply or reaches abnormally high levels, it may indicate problems such as excessive lubricant, insufficient clearance, poor installation, or issues with the sealing system. High-speed applications or improper bearing selection can also contribute to overheating.

Abnormal sounds from TIMKEN bearings can be identified using a stethoscope. Unusual noises such as strong metallic sounds, irregular patterns, or strange vibrations may signal underlying issues. These could include poor lubrication, misalignment of the shaft or housing, bearing damage, or the presence of foreign materials inside the bearing.

Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial for preventing unexpected failures. By following these detailed methods, you can ensure the smooth and efficient operation of your machinery while protecting the bearings from premature wear and tear.
