Cleaning and maintenance of various home textiles

Cleaning

1. Cotton Fabric:

When cleaning cotton fabrics, it's important to use a mild, non-bleaching detergent. I personally recommend using rice-based detergent, as it works very well and is gentle on the fabric. Make sure to dissolve the detergent in water before adding your cotton items. Soak them for no more than 30 minutes, and keep the water temperature below 30°C. Always wash light and dark colors separately to prevent color bleeding.

Avoid soaking bedding for too long—ideally no more than 30 minutes—to prevent fading. Use a neutral, gentle detergent instead of bleach. Never pour washing powder directly onto the fabric; always dissolve it first in water before submerging the items.

When drying, avoid direct sunlight. Turn the bedding inside out and place it in a cool, well-ventilated area. No matter what type of bedding you have, always check the care label before washing. By following these steps carefully, you can keep your bedding looking fresh and new for longer.

2. Silk, Soybean Fiber, and Similar Fabrics:

Wash these fabrics at room temperature using a silk-specific detergent. Avoid any products containing enzymes or bleach. I find that Blue Moon’s silk detergent works best. Adding a small amount of white vinegar during washing can help enhance the fabric’s luster. Dry cleaning is often recommended, but if hand-washing, avoid wringing or exposing to direct sunlight. Iron at low temperatures only.

3. Wool and Cashmere:

These delicate materials should be washed in cold water with a mild, enzyme-free detergent. Avoid long soaking times. Dry cleaning is usually the safest option, and if you choose to wash them by hand, use medium heat when ironing. Wool is notoriously tricky to care for, so it’s wise to be cautious. Amway’s laundry products are a reliable choice for their gentle yet effective formula.

4. Synthetic Fibers:

These fabrics should be washed in cold water and never soaked in hot water. They can be machine-washed, but avoid ironing the surface of velvet fabrics. Always follow the care instructions on the label to maintain the quality of the material.

5. Silk and Bamboo Fiber:

These should also be washed in cold water, avoiding high-temperature water. Dry cleaning is often preferred, but if hand-washing, don’t dry them in direct sunlight. After washing, hang them in a well-ventilated, dark area to dry. Iron at low temperatures only.

6. Linen Fabric:

When washing linen, avoid excessive force or rubbing, as this can cause pilling and damage the fabric’s appearance. Handle it gently to maintain its texture and longevity.

Storage

1. Store your bedding neatly folded, and include some mothballs to protect against pests. Keep it in a dark, dry, and well-ventilated space.

2. For wool items, avoid direct sunlight after use. Let the bedding cool down before folding and storing. Add insect repellent, and store in a dry, non-pressured area. Dry cleaning is recommended.

3. For silk items, if not exposed to moisture, air-dry them in a cool, shaded area. Once cooled, fold them carefully. Store with insect repellent in a dry place, and avoid dry cleaning or frequent washing.

4. Down jackets can be air-dried after use. Allow them to cool before folding and storing. Place insect repellent in the storage area, and keep them in a dry location.

5. White silk items should never be stored in wooden boxes or sealed containers, as this can cause yellowing over time. Always keep them in breathable, dry storage.
