BCG Global CEO Li Ruizhen: Youth does not leave a career suggestion before the age of 30

From the R&D staff of P&G's soap division to the CEO of top consulting firms, Richard I. Lesser's career path is unsuccessful. Since joining BCG, Li Ruiqi has worked as a recruiter, led the New York office, served as the leader of the Americas, and is now the global CEO. He has talked to thousands of young people about their career choices. Although each person's situation is different, the trade-offs, ambitions, and pressures they face are unusually similar. In order to help young people make career choices, Li Ruizhen put forward his career advice.

When I was in the upper grades of college, I was fortunate enough to get two job opportunities at the campus job fair: one was working in the R&D department of the petrochemical company, and the other was working in the soap research and development department of P&G. On the surface, it seems that I can easily make a choice. The petrochemical company's salary is 10% higher than that of Procter & Gamble – considering that I still have a student loan, this is a very attractive condition. In addition, the petrochemical company's work is closer to my point of interest.

In order to make a better decision, I took a very innovative approach at the time - I made a spreadsheet using the Lotus 1-2-3 software I just launched, listing all the determinants in the table. And score them one by one. The scores of the two jobs are very close, but the results clearly indicate that I should accept the work of the petrochemical company. However, I still have doubts about such "final results." I have always loved the culture and people of P&G. The company's focus on training and the responsibility of giving young engineers are also my yearning. I very much hope to have the project I am responsible for and help it to go to market. I also want to have a diverse responsibilities and be able to work on a range of different issues and projects.

Therefore, I made my own choice: I accepted the work of Procter & Gamble (and also successfully reduced a little loan). Looking back, I think this is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Five years later, I got a master's degree in business administration. At this time, I faced more job opportunities, but I also fell into the same choice. Although the pros and cons analysis tells me that there are other safer options, my heart is clear that the best place for me is the BCG New York office, which was only established 20 people.

Since joining BCG, I have been recruiting in New York, leading the New York office, serving as the leader of the Americas, and now becoming the global CEO. I have talked to thousands of young people about their career choices. Although each person's situation is different, the trade-offs, ambitions, and pressures they face in career planning are unusually similar.

Although I can't help you build a form or weigh your selection criteria, I hope to give you some advice to help you identify some of the most important criteria at the beginning of choosing the most diverse and most liberal career.

Starting point: a job that really excites you and fulfills

You may feel that this is self-evident. Why do you choose a job that you don't like? But in fact, many people will make mistakes in this step. Career consultants sometimes focus too much on beautifying resumes. Insecurity can also push people to safer choices. Peer pressure can also push you to opportunities that will make you look like others want.

Never underestimate the value of a job that truly brings you satisfaction. When we do things that excite us, its positive effects will continue. We will ask for more responsibility, work more positively, more creatively, and contribute more to the team. I know that if I accept the work of a petrochemical company, I will definitely do a good job. But I still clearly remember the infinite motivation I felt at P&G and beyond BCG, which came from my job responsibilities and my colleagues – all of which had a direct positive impact on my personal growth and performance.

Personally, I would recommend a “five-year test” for any job: Can I have a happy five-year job in this job? Of course, you don't have to promise to spend five years – new job opportunities will always emerge, even in the same company. But if you can happily spend five years in a position, you will not only be trained in the moment, but also likely to build the skills, achievements, ideas and relationships you need in the future.

For many of you, there are many ways to help you clear the way. Three questions will help you narrow your choices further.

At work, can you build the capabilities you need in the future?

I always emphasize this point repeatedly. Most people change employers several times during their careers. Even if you work in the same company, your job responsibilities will change dramatically. The world today is constantly being promoted and shaped by factors such as globalization and technology, which increasingly require people to learn and adapt. Compared with the past, it is even more necessary to find an employer who can transform himself and make himself grow and improve in many aspects. You must try to avoid stagnation.

Young people in their 20s are in a unique era and should strive to build a range of abilities that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Most of us will work 40-50 years, and some will even work longer. For example, my father retired at the age of 79 and has worked in three excellent jobs throughout his life. Young people in their 20s should use this period to invest in themselves.

Every job can help you grow in some way. What does this actually mean?

To be broad, not just depth. For many employers, the best way to get value from employees in the short term is to train employees so they can do one or two tasks well. However, for you, if you can get more development beyond core skills and look at the world from different perspectives (such as overseas work experience), then you will get more value. It is important to delve into professional knowledge, especially in areas where you are interested and passionate, but you should not miss the opportunity to become an all-round adaptive talent with relatively low risk.

When apprentices, not just being managed. Your superiors must be very concerned about the quality of your work, but what you need to know is how much your superiors care about you. The apprenticeship goes far beyond managing your work, but investing you extra, so that you can not only improve productivity in the short term, but also personal improvement and improvement in the long run. Apprenticeship means being willing to give you a candid evaluation on an informal basis on a regular basis, not just an annual assessment. Apprenticeship also means forcing you out of your personal “comfort zone” and supporting you when things are in trouble. In an apprenticeship environment, talented colleagues will support each other as part of a corporate culture and believe that they have an obligation to help others succeed—an attitude that really helps the team to succeed.

Have the ability, not just knowledge. In the past, junior positions paid more attention to the knowledge you gained. However, in today's world, knowledge is becoming more and more commoditized, and this trend will become more apparent in the future. What you can do with the knowledge you get, this will be what makes you different. Can you get insights from different sources? Can you lead the team to achieve efficient performance? Do you have the ability to drive change in a complex environment, looking at issues from the perspective of customers, employees and society?

Can you bring about change?

Mark Twain once said: "The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you found your goal." The goal is to drive the career to a brilliant future.

Of course, most of us won't get the achievements of Steven Jobs, Sergery Brin and Elon Musk, making the world a world of earth. The change. Over time, your willingness to change the world may change, and the way you can change the world will continue to increase. So don't just focus on the changes you can make in the short term, but rather discover the meaning of your work as early as possible.

When weighing the choices in your hands, ask yourself the following questions: Is the company contributing to changing the world, or is it just seeking to derive value from the status quo? Can my work have a real impact? Is the power of the work environment the best idea and idea, or is it just the will of management? Does the value of this job fit my own values? Am I proud of the work I do?

Can you balance work and life?

My consulting industry has always been known for its hard work. Customers have high expectations for us, and the time given to us is often very short. But even in industries where work is so strong, finding a balance between work and life is extremely important to your success. Finding the focus of life outside of work, maintaining health and good interpersonal relationships, and enjoying the people who work with you from the heart – all this is not secondary, but vital, for your physical and mental health and professional development. Extremely beneficial.

The most important things for you will change over time. In a period of time, being fully engaged in work (even if you work overtime for a long time) will make you feel satisfied. Traveling around the world or taking on a difficult task will make you feel excited and excited, especially when you see yourself. This is especially true when the impact is paid. However, as you get older, you may look at the trade-offs you make from a different perspective. You may find that more controllable work, more flexible working hours, and taking time off are more important to you.

The key is to be honest with yourself and accept what is important to you at the moment. Even if your balance point is more work-oriented, you need to make sure that life outside of work is equally important at some point in time so that you can get the support you need when your focus shifts.

My last suggestion is that in order to make the right career choices, you have to make a huge effort like a job search. In order to get a job, job seekers often spend a lot of time and energy writing resumes, networking, getting interviews, and preparing for interviews. When they finally get a job, they are already exhausted.

But to make the right career choices, people need to continue to work hard. Initially, you can listen to the recruiter's lobbying, read anonymous reviews on the job site, or listen to suggestions from friends and family. But if you stop here, then you are deceiving yourself. You should seek their opinions and opinions from the company's current and outgoing employees and those who deserve your trust. You should ask questions to them without hesitation and look for answers in real life examples, not just corporate vision or policy statements. Then you need time to think. Our decisions are often largely influenced by the last conversation – this is why car dealers are reluctant to leave us. But if you can communicate with those who give you a job, and still feel confident about your final choice, then you can make a better decision.

I have no plans to be the world's greatest soap maker, but the important choices I made when choosing my first job are still a decisive moment today. The choices of the time and the decision to join BCG later made me understand how important it is to look at work opportunities from many different perspectives—although some angles are not as obvious as others. These two choices also made me understand that the work environment, culture and team of the future employer must be taken into consideration when selecting a job opportunity. By self-reflecting, focusing and committed to self-investment and changing the world, you will find the job opportunities that are best for you right now and prepare for your future career.
