Xiamen Haicang jumped to the country's largest stone import port

Abstract Despite the global foreign trade economy being in a weakened state, the import of stone at Xiamen Haicang Port has shown strong growth, going against the general trend. In 2012, Xiamen Customs supervised the import of 3.617 million tons of stone at the port, marking a year-on-year increase of 24.67%, which placed it at the top among all Chinese ports. This remarkable performance highlights the resilience and demand for construction materials in the region.

To meet the rising demand for imported stone, the Xiamen Customs Office in Haitang introduced a green channel for customs clearance, offering 24-hour reservation inspections and a "first-inquiry, one-time notification" service to help enterprises complete their procedures efficiently. Additionally, the completion of the first and second phases of the Haishu Bonded Port Area provided a solid foundation for stone import activities. The implementation of an intelligent bayonet monitoring system by the Customs enabled automatic release of goods throughout the year, ensuring smooth and timely processing of imported stone after customs clearance, significantly reducing operational time and costs for businesses.

According to the Xiamen Customs Office in Haishu, the majority of the imported stone at Haishu Port is high-grade marble used for luxury decoration purposes. In 2012, a total of 2,871,100 tons were imported, making up nearly 80% of the total imports. The sources of these stones are diverse, spanning over 11 countries and regions, including Finland, Norway, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, the United States, Canada, Portugal, Egypt, Turkey, and India. This wide range of suppliers underscores the international nature of the stone trade and the strategic importance of Haicang Port in the global supply chain.

The success of Haicang Port in handling such a large volume of stone imports reflects not only the efficiency of its customs procedures but also the growing role of Xiamen as a key hub for trade and logistics in Southeast China. As the demand for high-quality building materials continues to rise, the port is well-positioned to maintain its competitive edge in the years ahead.
