Under the backdrop of a globally weak foreign trade economy, the volume of imported stone at Xiamen Haicang Port has shown strong growth, bucking the overall trend. In 2012, Xiamen Customs supervised the import of 3.617 million tons of stone at the port, marking a significant year-on-year increase of 24.67%, which placed it at the top among all Chinese ports. This surge in imports highlights the resilience and demand for construction and decorative materials despite broader economic challenges.
To address the growing flow of imported stone, the Xiamen Customs Office at Haitang established a green channel for streamlined clearance procedures. This initiative includes 24-hour reservation-based inspection services and a “first-inquiry, one-time notification†policy, making it easier for businesses to manage their import operations efficiently. Additionally, the completion of the first and second phases of the Haishu Bonded Port Area has created a more robust infrastructure for stone import activities.
The customs authorities have also introduced an intelligent bayonet monitoring system, enabling automated and continuous release of containers throughout the year. This technology ensures that imported stone is processed quickly after customs clearance, significantly reducing both time and operational costs for companies involved in the trade.
According to the Xiamen Customs Office at Haishu, the majority of the imported stone at Haishu Port consists of high-grade marble used for luxury decoration purposes. In 2012, approximately 2,871,100 tons of marble were imported, accounting for nearly 80% of total stone imports. The sources of these materials are diverse, spanning over 11 countries and regions, including Finland, Norway, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, the United States, Canada, Portugal, Egypt, Turkey, and India. This wide range of suppliers reflects the global nature of the stone trade and the strategic importance of Haicang Port as a key hub for such imports.
