Cracking the "Garbage Besieged City" Difficulties The Beijing Service Fair's Environmental Service and Technology Sector Relaunched New German Technology

Waste has become an unavoidable part of urban growth. Every year, cities and their residents generate hundreds of millions of tons of waste. On one side, the volume of urban waste is constantly increasing, while on the other, the unbearable smell and environmental impact of garbage have turned into a serious challenge for waste management. Rapidly expanding Chinese cities are now facing the "garbage siege," a problem that threatens both public health and environmental sustainability. For many years, China has relied heavily on landfills and composting to manage its waste. Currently, about 80-90% of urban waste ends up in landfills, which not only consumes valuable land but also fails to recover useful resources. Moreover, basic landfill methods without proper treatment often lead to groundwater and surface water contamination. Open dumps release harmful gases, attract pests like flies, mosquitoes, and rats, and create unsanitary conditions. Even modern sanitary landfills, although better at preventing pollution, still require large areas of land and do not fully address the issue of waste reduction. Composting, while beneficial, is inefficient in reducing total waste volumes and produces low-quality fertilizer. These traditional methods are no longer sufficient to meet the growing demands of modern cities. According to statistics, two-thirds of over 600 large and medium-sized cities across China are surrounded by garbage, and one-fourth have no suitable places to store it. Over the years, more than 7 billion tons of urban waste have been dumped, with an annual increase of around 8.98%. In Beijing alone, 18,300 tons of garbage are generated daily, and this figure is rising by 8% each year. However, the city's current disposal capacity is only 10.41 million tons per year, leaving a gap of up to 8,000 tons per day. During the “Two Sessions,” Zhou Shengxian, Minister of Environmental Protection, highlighted that the garbage crisis is a common challenge for environmental protection. He emphasized the need to clarify responsibilities, strengthen waste management, and most importantly, rely on technological solutions to address the issue effectively. In response to this challenge, the Beijing International Fair on Environmental Technology and Services introduced German waste processing technology as a potential solution for Chinese cities. This advanced system offers a sustainable and efficient way to manage waste. The German waste compound treatment project is considered one of the most advanced technologies globally. It features zero secondary pollution, high energy conversion rates, 100% waste reduction, low costs, and mature application. The process involves anaerobic fermentation and "liquefaction-gasification" to produce combustible gas used for power generation. Compared to traditional incineration methods, this system is far more efficient and environmentally friendly. All operations take place in a closed tank, ensuring no odor, groundwater contamination, or toxic emissions such as dioxins or heavy metals. Through the platform of the Beijing International Trade Fair, the German project team will seek partnerships, sign cooperation agreements, and secure funding ranging from 300 million to 700 million yuan to implement the technology. The goal is to transform garbage into a green resource, supporting sustainable urban development. As part of the 2013 Beijing International Trade Fair, the "China International Environmental Technology and Service Conference" (http://jjh.cusdn.org.cn/) was held from May 28 to June 1 at the Beijing National Convention Center. Supported by several key organizations, the event featured project signings, promotion meetings, exhibitions, and visits by international delegations. The conference aimed to bring together global leaders, top environmental companies, and city representatives to promote international collaboration. With 4–5 professional promotion meetings, 60 private business negotiations, and over 300–500 million USD in contract opportunities, the event served as a high-level platform for global environmental cooperation. It aimed to enhance China’s environmental service industry, support international environmental projects, and foster a cleaner, greener future for all.
