Ancient jade making method:

Traditional Methods of Ancient Jade Production:

Many ancient jade artifacts have been buried in the soil for centuries, often suffering from pressure and collapse. During excavation, they can be damaged, and over time, they may also get scratched or broken due to handling. As a result, most authentic ancient jades show signs of wear and tear. To create fake ancient jade, counterfeiters must artificially age the pieces to give them an old appearance.

Knocking: This technique involves striking the edges and protruding parts of the jade with a hammer or similar tool to create cracks, chips, or even break off parts like the ears or feet. These broken pieces are then reattached. Another method is to heat the jade and then rapidly cool it, causing it to crack naturally, mimicking the effects of aging.

Drilling: Using small drills or rudder mills, artisans create pits of various sizes on the surface of the jade. These marks resemble bruises or weathering, giving the piece an aged look. With a magnifying glass, one can easily spot the drill marks, which are not natural but man-made.

Sand Rubbing: After polishing new jade, it is rubbed with sand to dull its shine, making it look older. Some areas might be left rough while others are polished, simulating the uneven wear seen on genuine antique jades that have been passed down through generations.

Over time, real ancient jade undergoes chemical changes, resulting in a unique patina known as “dip” or “ancient.” These characteristics add to the charm and value of authentic pieces. To imitate this, forgers often dye the jade or apply “dip” treatments. The presence of these aged features—such as color changes, stains, and a worn appearance—can help deceive buyers into thinking they are holding a real antique. There are numerous methods used to achieve this effect, making it challenging to distinguish between real and fake without expert knowledge.
