Ancient jade making method:

Traditional Methods of Ancient Jade Production:

Many ancient jade artifacts have been buried in the soil for centuries, often suffering from pressure and collapse. During excavation, they can get damaged, and over time, they may also be harmed through accidental handling. As a result, most genuine ancient jades show signs of wear and damage. To create fake ancient jade, artisans must simulate this aging process by deliberately damaging the pieces to give them an aged appearance.

Knocking: This technique involves striking the edges and raised parts of the jade with a hammer or similar tool, creating cracks, chips, or even breaking off parts like the ears or feet. These broken sections are then reattached. Another method is to heat the jade and then rapidly cool it, causing it to crack and look old.

Rudder Mill: Using a small rudder mill or steel drill, craftsmen can create pits of varying sizes on the surface of the jade, giving it a weathered look. These marks resemble bruises and can be seen under magnification, revealing the tool's touch.

Sand Polishing: After polishing a newly made jade piece, artisans use sand to rub its surface, reducing its shiny new appearance. Some areas may be left rough while others are polished, mimicking the worn look of long-used ancient jade.

True ancient jade not only shows physical damage but also undergoes chemical changes over time, resulting in what is known as "dip" and "ancient" effects—unique coloration and markings that make the jade more attractive and authentic-looking. Therefore, counterfeiters often dye or "dip" new jade to mimic these characteristics. The presence of "dip," "qin," and "old" features is considered a sign of authenticity in ancient jade. There are numerous methods used to achieve this effect, making it difficult to distinguish real from fake without expert knowledge.
