According to the announcement issued by the Taiwan Machine Tool Development Foundation (TMTF) on November 3, from January to August 2009, Taiwan's machine tool exports decreased by 56.4% compared with the same period of last year, imports fell by 82.2%, and imports and exports both fell sharply.
From January to August 2009, the total export value of Taiwan's machine tools reached US$1.129 billion, a 56.4% decrease from the same period of the previous year. Among them, cutting machine tools were US$ 851.01 million, down 58.5% from the same period of last year. The export value of forming machine tools was US$ 278.88 million, a decrease of 48.3% from the same period of the previous year.
Among the export markets, China and Hong Kong ranked first, with an export value of US$41.43 million, accounting for 37.1% of total exports, a decrease of 45.0% from the same period of the previous year. Among them, the export to the mainland market in August was US$53.3 million, a decrease of 45.2% (a decrease of US$43.94 million) from the same month of the previous year. However, compared with July, the export to the mainland in August seems to have declined again. The United States ranked second with an export value of US$92.79 million, accounting for 8.2% of exports, a decrease of 59.9% from the same period of the previous year. Germany ranked third with an export value of US$53.32 million, accounting for 4.9%, and a decrease of 62.6% from the same period of the previous year.
On the import side, the reporter was informed that from January to August 2009, the import value of Taiwan's machine tools reached US$210.05 million, a decrease of 82.2% from the same period of the previous year. The import value of cutting machine tools was US$16.843 million, a decrease of 85.0% compared with the same period of last year. The import value of forming machine tools was US$43.62 million, a decrease of 35.9% from the same period of the previous year.
Among the sources of imports, Japan ranked first, with imports reaching US$96.76 million and 45.6% of total imports, down 86.8% from the same period last year. Germany ranked second with an import value of US$33.19 million, accounting for 15.7% of total imports, down 37.0% from the same period last year. Italy ranked third with an import value of US$ 17.22 million, accounting for 8.1% of total imports, an increase of 63.1% over the same period last year.
