Nanjing to enhance the city's night lighting to create a new business card for "Night Nanjing"

The charm of a city extends beyond the bustling days to include the refined ambiance of the night. As part of a renewed effort to enhance urban environments, Nanjing is accelerating its implementation of a three-year plan to upgrade its nighttime lighting. From now until 2018, the initiative aims to create a multi-layered framework centered around landmarks like the Yangtze River, Qinhuai River, Xuanwu Lake, the Ming City Wall, and peripheral highways. These efforts seek to craft a stunning "nighttime business card" for the city. However, how can light pollution be curtailed during this large-scale transformation? How can we promote energy efficiency while maintaining aesthetic appeal? And how will the lighting of the Ming City Wall balance preservation with illumination? These pressing concerns prompted us to conduct an in-depth investigation. To address these issues, Nanjing’s new lighting strategy emphasizes the creation of an "eco-friendly light environment." Concerns about excessive brightness and energy consumption have sparked discussions about innovative designs and technologies. Past attempts at cityscape lighting often prioritized novelty and intensity, inadvertently contributing to light pollution. Nanjing's approach now focuses on minimizing environmental disruption by carefully calibrating light colors to offer a visually engaging yet comfortable experience. “Glare and stray light are the most common forms of light pollution,” noted Yang Lan, a designer at the Municipal Urban Management Bureau’s Street Lighting Office. “Before installing any fixtures, we conduct meticulous simulations to determine their brightness, wattage, and material. The placement and height of the lights are precisely adjusted to control beam angles, ensuring light falls exactly where intended without encroaching on darker areas.” At the South Plaza of Nanjing Railway Station, traditional Chinese-style bamboo-inspired lampposts, symbolizing steady progress, illuminate softly from every angle. “Each bamboo lamp contains over 30 individual modules,” explained Xu Zhixiang, assistant manager at Xuanwu Lake Lighting Construction Company. “This ensures a pleasant visual experience regardless of perspective.” On the lakeside pathways of Xuanwu Lake, workers carefully adjust tree-mounted lights at a 60-degree upward angle to avoid disturbing passersby. Headlights are mounted five meters above ground level, while smaller fixtures are positioned beneath five-meter canopies. Collaboration between designers and technicians is key. “Designers visit the sites to guide installations, fine-tuning placements and calibrations,” said a representative from the Street Lighting Office. “This ensures outcomes align with our vision.” According to Shen Ru, Secretary General of the Nanjing Illumination Institute, this project marks a significant leap forward in urban lighting. By analyzing ambient brightness levels and coordinating lighting schemes accordingly, the city has achieved scientifically sound planning, design, and execution. “The initial stages of this project demonstrate tangible progress,” Shen remarked. Beyond mere aesthetics, this initiative reflects Nanjing’s commitment to sustainable development. Through careful consideration of ecological impacts and energy efficiency, the city hopes to redefine its nocturnal identity while preserving cultural heritage. As the project unfolds, it promises to deliver a revitalized "Nanjing by Night," showcasing both innovation and tradition.
