Jiangsu began to use photovoltaic power generation on a large scale

In November, the provincial power company revealed that Jiangsu province had accepted 13 new photovoltaic (PV) power generation projects, with a combined installed capacity of 30.5 MW. This development highlights the growing impact of the State Grid’s policy allowing free grid connection for distributed PV projects, which is now playing a key role in boosting domestic demand for solar energy. Jiangsu, a major hub for the PV industry, currently has over 40 PV projects with a total capacity exceeding 400 MW, many of which are small-scale systems around 6 MW. In early November, Jiangsu Power Company issued the "Regulations on Grid-connected Management of Distributed Photovoltaic Power Generation," marking a significant step toward making grid access for small and medium-sized PV projects more efficient and accessible. At Taizhou Power Supply Company, marketing staff noted that there has been an unprecedented level of interest from businesses looking to install PV systems. Over the past month, eight projects have been reviewed by the local power department, with five of them closely linked to Taizhou Zhongsheng Optoelectronics Co., Ltd., which is planning to invest in part of a solar power station and sell the electricity generated. “These projects are mostly rooftop installations,” said a power supply official. “Some will be built on gymnasium rooftops, while others will be located on large factory buildings.” The increased activity reflects a rising domestic demand for solar energy, according to the power company. Zhang Shengming, manager of Zhongsheng Optoelectronics' PV project, emphasized that the free grid access policy has significantly reduced costs related to grid connection design and simplified the approval process. “This is very beneficial for our business,” he said. “Next year, we plan to sell 70 MW of PV products in China, which is seven times the amount sold in 2012.” Gu Guodong, director of the marketing department at Jiangsu Power Company, added that the trend of small-scale distributed PV systems is already well-established in countries like Germany and Denmark. He believes the new State Grid policy will bring new opportunities to the Jiangsu PV industry. The provincial government's support has also contributed to strong growth in emerging industries. In the first three quarters of this year, the output value and sales of Jiangsu’s top ten emerging sectors grew by 20.9% and 20.7%, respectively—outpacing the provincial average by 8 percentage points. The rise in domestic PV orders has become a key driver of this growth. Distributed photovoltaic power generation represents a modern approach to energy production and utilization. It promotes local generation, nearby grid connection, and direct consumption, which not only maximizes the efficiency of solar power plants but also reduces transmission losses typically associated with long-distance power delivery.
