(1) Starting Stage
Before 1980: Simple product structure, limited functions
Before the 1980s, China's gas industry was still in its early stages of development. Urban gas adoption was very low, with only about 10% of people using it, and even fewer in rural areas. Gas stoves were just beginning to appear on the market, and their design was basic and functional. The products had a simple structure and performed only one main function.
At that time, the most common gas appliance was a basic stove made from cast iron. These stoves had a simple surface finish, such as plating or spraying, and lacked electric ignition systems. The manufacturing process was also quite primitive, with little innovation or advanced technology involved.
(2) Development Stage
1980-1990: Improved durability and reliability
From the 1980s onwards, with the opening up of the Chinese economy, the market began to grow rapidly. More foreign gas appliances entered the Chinese market, and the number of manufacturers increased significantly—from nearly 10 to over 100. The industry evolved from being dominated by state-owned companies to including collective and private enterprises as well.
International brands started collaborating with local manufacturers, which helped improve the quality and appearance of gas stoves. Product variety and functionality began to expand, and key components like panels, burners, and ignition systems saw major improvements.
For example, panel materials changed from basic cast iron to cold-rolled steel with a painted finish. Burners became more efficient, and electronic piezoelectric ignition replaced manual methods, improving both performance and user experience. This period marked a significant step forward in the reliability and durability of gas stoves.
(3) Breakthrough Stage
1992-2006: Diverse styles, improved safety and performance
After 1992, China's economy experienced rapid growth, and so did the gas appliance industry. The introduction of advanced foreign technologies led to major innovations in gas stove design and functionality.
Cooktops became more diverse in style, with enhanced safety features, better materials, and improved performance. Production processes became more refined, with greater automation and smarter designs. Energy efficiency, environmental protection, and safe operation became important priorities.
Materials used in cooktops gradually shifted away from cast iron. Stainless steel, non-stick coatings, tempered glass, and even ceramic surfaces became popular choices. These changes not only improved aesthetics but also boosted functionality and ease of use.
During this time, several well-known Chinese brands emerged, such as Midea, Vantage, Fire King, Shuaikang, and FOTILE. These companies played a key role in shaping the modern gas stove market in China.
