Reducer with lubricating oil

Which lubricants are used for each type of reducer?

1. The horizontal cycloid reducer typically uses oil bath lubrication under normal conditions. The oil level should be maintained at the middle of the oil window. In harsh environments or high-temperature conditions, special attention must be given to ensure proper lubrication and cooling.

2. Cycloidal pinwheel reducers are generally lubricated with 40# or 50# mechanical oil at standard temperatures. For better performance and longer service life, it's recommended to use 70# or 90# extreme pressure gear oil. Oil selection should also consider temperature extremes—both high and low—to maintain efficiency and prevent damage.

3. When installing a planetary cycloid reducer vertically, it's crucial to prevent oil starvation in the oil pump to avoid component damage. Proper oil flow is essential for smooth operation and longevity.

4. To refuel, rotate the vent cap on top of the base. To drain, remove the oil drain plug located at the bottom. Note that the reducer is initially oil-free and requires proper filling before use.

5. After the first 100 hours of operation, the oil should be changed and the internal components cleaned thoroughly. It is recommended to replace the oil every six months (based on an 8-hour workday). If operating conditions are severe, the oil change interval should be shortened. Regular cleaning and oil changes—every 3 to 6 months—have been proven to significantly extend the reducer’s lifespan. Always keep the lubricant level topped up during use.

6. New reducers come pre-greased, and the grease should be replaced every six months. The recommended grease types are aluminum disulfide-2# or 2L-2# lithium-based grease.

Lubricant Quality Levels

Diesel engines operating under low-speed, heavy-load, or high-speed, heavy-load conditions require CE-grade oil. Turbocharged diesel engines should use CD-grade or higher. CF-4 oil is ideal for high-speed, heavy-duty engines, especially those used for long-haul highway driving. It helps prevent piston ring wear and oil thickening. CG-4 oil is suitable when fuel sulfur content is below 0.05%. CH-4 oil is recommended for engines with high injection pressure and elevated operating temperatures, such as bimetallic piston engines. CI-4 oil is necessary for engines equipped with low-temperature exhaust gas recirculation systems.

High-grade lubricants offer significant improvements in oxidation resistance, cleanliness, and dispersibility compared to lower-grade oils. They also provide better protection against valve wear, deposit buildup, filter clogging, lubricant loss, and improved low-temperature pumpability.

With increasing environmental regulations in China, engine manufacturers have introduced high-performance, electronically controlled engines. As a result, the required oil quality has also risen. CD-grade oil is now obsolete, and CF and CH grades have become the industry standard. Considering factors like heavy vehicle loads, poor road conditions, inexperienced drivers, and fluctuating diesel sulfur levels, using high-quality oil is essential to prevent premature engine failure and ensure optimal performance.
