Rieger's method of conservation

Rieger Begonia is a unique winter-blooming variety, developed from a cross between Soco Begonia and various bulbous Begonias. This plant stands out for its compact and full growth habit, large and abundant flowers, vibrant colors, multiple blooming cycles throughout the year, and strong resistance to diseases. It's an ideal choice for indoor decoration, bringing beauty and color to any space during the colder months.

Lige Haitang thrives in a warm, humid, semi-shady environment and is not tolerant of cold or extreme heat. It requires high humidity and prefers slightly acidic, loose, and well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Proper care ensures healthy growth and long-term vitality.

During the hot summer months, when growth slows down or stops completely, it's important to prune the remaining leaves and cut back about 50% to 70% of the plant. Reduce watering to keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding overwatering that can lead to root rot. Once autumn brings cooler temperatures, new shoots will begin to emerge from the base. When these reach a suitable height, trim the old stems at the base with a clean knife and increase watering to encourage vigorous growth. Once the new branches are well-formed, leave only three per pot, removing the rest to concentrate nutrients and promote earlier shaping of the plant.

After October, the plant begins to grow more rapidly. In addition to keeping the soil consistently moist, you can apply a diluted liquid fertilizer (0.2%) every 15 days to support its development and enhance flowering potential.

In winter, ensure the plant receives enough light and maintain a temperature above 10°C. During the seedling stage, when the plant has four leaves, pinch off the growing tip to encourage the growth of lateral branches, resulting in a bushier appearance. Remove any excess flower buds promptly to prevent unnecessary nutrient consumption, which could affect the quality of the blooms. Also, remove yellow or diseased leaves as needed to maintain plant health.

Rieger Begonia is a short-day plant, meaning its flowering is influenced by the length of daylight. When the day length exceeds 14 hours, the plant focuses on vegetative growth. When the day length drops below 10 hours, it shifts into reproductive growth, promoting flower bud formation. This characteristic allows growers to control the flowering time, making it easier to achieve beautiful blooms at desired times.
