On March 18, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) announced its plan to launch five major anti-counterfeiting campaigns this year, with a strong focus on affordable housing projects. The initiative aims to prevent substandard materials such as "powder bricks," "slim steel bars," and "floor bars" from entering the market, which could compromise the safety of buildings and infrastructure.
In addition to construction materials, AQSIQ will also conduct a special campaign targeting children's products, including toys, car seats, clothing, shoes, and educational tools, all of which are crucial for child safety and health. The administration has emphasized stricter enforcement against serious quality violations, ensuring that essential goods like food, clothing, and transportation remain safe and reliable for consumers.
The AQSIQ highlighted that the quality of basic living needs is of utmost importance. This year’s efforts will specifically target construction materials and steel reinforcements used in affordable housing projects. Inspections will be intensified to ensure compliance with national standards and prevent unsafe products from reaching the market. Penalties for violations will be more severe, with measures such as fines, power cuts, public warnings, and even business closures being considered to deter illegal activities.
Companies that were previously inspected will now undergo a "review" process this year. The AQSIQ will combine regular inspections with surprise visits to ensure that past issues are fully addressed. Cases involving ineffective investigations, regional quality problems, or local protectionism will be flagged, and audit recommendations will be issued to enforce accountability.
Last year, law enforcement agencies cracked over 3,400 cases related to counterfeit construction materials, arrested more than 8,500 suspects, and dismantled over 4,700 illegal production sites. The AQSIQ also handled 774 major cases and seized nearly 1.94 billion yuan worth of fake building materials. These efforts demonstrate a growing commitment to improving product safety and protecting public interests through strict oversight and enforcement.
