The time intervals between these incidents were 600 hours, 400 hours, and 230 hours respectively, showing a clear trend of increasing frequency. The machine was purchased in May 2003, and all operations and maintenance were strictly carried out according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Since the bearing failure occurred so frequently, it is unlikely that the issue stemmed from the bearing itself. Each time, the bearing was replaced following the manufacturer's guidelines. The transmission shaft connects the output shaft of the torque converter to the input shaft of the transmission. The horizontal distance between the two shafts is 265mm, with a vertical difference of 30mm. Calculations show that the angle between the drive shaft and the transmission input shaft is approximately 6.5 degrees. The ends of the drive shaft are supported by radial ball bearings. However, based on the analysis, it would be more appropriate to use tapered roller bearings, which have a higher load capacity. This is because the universal joint drive system does not have a constant velocity characteristic—meaning the angular velocity of the input and output shafts is not equal. This causes additional alternating loads on the bearing and connected components, reducing the bearing's lifespan. From the above analysis, it is clear that in a universal joint transmission system, when there is an angle between the input and output shafts, the non-constant velocity characteristic leads to increased alternating loads on the output shaft and its connected parts. The larger the angle, the more severe this effect becomes, resulting in greater stress on the supporting bearings. Considering the layout of the motor grader, changing the transmission method between the torque converter and the transmission is not practical. Similarly, replacing the support shaft is not feasible under field conditions. Therefore, the only viable solution is to reduce the angle between the two axes, thereby minimizing the impact of the universal joint's non-constant velocity characteristic. To achieve this, a 10mm thick speed control washer was added to the transmission support, reducing the angle between the drive shaft and the transmission output shaft to 4.3 degrees.
