A couple from Qinghe County in the Altay region, Ahiya and Maria, were inspired by their community's parking challenges. They often heard stories from friends and neighbors about the difficulties of finding a safe place to park. With a growing number of people owning cars but very few proper garages, they decided to take action. After learning from others who had no prior experience in inventing, they spent two years developing a unique solution—a solar-powered, retractable garage that could be easily moved and stored.
On March 13, the reporter reached out to Maria Axayi via phone. She shared that her husband, Ahiya Hulman, is a villager from Buheba Village in Argyle, and he has been driving since graduating from a technical school. Maria works as a primary school teacher at No. 1 Middle School in the same area.
"There are many people here who own cars, but there are very few garages available," Maria explained. "We often have to park outside or on the roadside, which leads to problems like cold starts in winter and damage from scratches." One of their friends mentioned that cars left outside in the cold couldn’t start properly, while others faced frequent damage from being parked on the street. This motivated them to create a better solution.
In March 2010, the couple began brainstorming and worked for about six months to finalize their design. They were inspired by the accordion mechanism, allowing the structure to expand and contract. Maria took charge of the design drawings, while Ahiya focused on the mechanical aspects. Initially, they considered fixed garages, but later realized a movable option would be more practical. The garage was designed to be powered by solar energy and controlled remotely.
According to the model provided by Maria, the garage consists of several "U"-shaped frames connected together. Each frame has wheels that can be retracted when not in use. When fully folded, the width is between 30 cm and 50 cm. It looks like a square arch from the outside, but when expanded, it becomes a spacious passage. The rolling shutter doors on both ends can be pulled down to create a sealed, secure space.
After more than two years of research and development, the couple successfully created a functional prototype of their solar-powered retractable garage. It was granted a national utility model patent in March of last year.
Maria’s colleague, Liu Qiuju, commented: “The garage designed by the couple is easy to install in open spaces or yards. It protects cars from sun, wind, and rain, and is low-cost, simple, and user-friendly.â€
Despite the success, Maria admitted that funding has been a challenge. So far, they’ve only built models and haven’t started mass production yet. They hope to bring their invention to market soon. (Reporter: Ren Chunxiang)
