The Installation and Disassembly Process of "SKF Bearings in Motors and Generators"
When dealing with SKF bearings in motors and generators, proper installation and disassembly are crucial to ensure the longevity and performance of the equipment. Whether it's a large or small bearing, the process must be handled carefully to avoid damage and maintain efficiency.
For large bearings, the force required to install or remove them is significant. Since these bearings cannot be easily pressed onto the shaft or into the housing, it is recommended to use a thermal device. If there is an interference fit between the bearing and the shaft, the bearing should be heated. On the other hand, if the interference is between the bearing and the housing, then the housing itself should be heated. This method ensures a smooth and safe installation or removal process.
Small and medium-sized bearings are usually removed using conventional pullers. SKF recommends using TMM series pullers, which are self-centering and equipped with spring-loaded arms for easier operation. In special cases where the inner or outer ring is difficult to access, a dedicated internal puller can be used to safely remove the bearing without causing damage.
For cylindrical roller bearings, the inner ring is often removed using thermal methods. SKF has developed a range of induction heating devices specifically for this purpose. If frequent removal is required, the SKF adjustable induction heater is an efficient and reliable option, allowing quick and precise heating of the bearing for easy disassembly.
For smaller bearings, especially those with a bore diameter less than 50 mm, cooling methods such as the TMFT device are effective. Bearings with a hole diameter of around 100 mm can typically be installed using mechanical or hydraulic presses. For cold installations, mechanical or hydraulic heaters are commonly used to ensure proper fit and alignment without damaging the components.
Proper handling of bearings in motors and generators is essential for maintaining system reliability. Using the right tools and techniques—whether thermal, mechanical, or hydraulic—can greatly improve the efficiency and lifespan of the bearings.
