Solar energy converts carbon dioxide to methane

An energy paper published on the 7th by the British “Nature and Communications” magazine stated that scientists have demonstrated a new method of using solar energy to convert carbon dioxide into methane. This way of producing fuel using greenhouse gases will probably provide a sustainable energy source for humankind.

The thermal radiation of the sun is clean and sustainable, but it is very difficult to store it because the battery has only limited storage capacity and longevity. So researchers propose that using solar energy to produce fuel is a viable solution.

This time, a team of scientists from the Korea Institute of Basic Science established a new system that uses solar energy to convert carbon dioxide into methane. The first thing they use is zinc oxide, which is a mineral that is commonly found in physical sunscreens. The principle of UV screening is absorption and scattering. Its electrons can accept the energy of ultraviolet light to undergo a transition, and when the size of the material is far When it is smaller than the wavelength of ultraviolet rays, the ultraviolet rays acting thereon can be scattered in various directions. After using zinc oxide to effectively transfer solar energy, researchers added copper oxide crystals. When sunlight strikes the mixture, charge begins to flow. In carbonated water (containing carbon dioxide), these charges promote a complex chemical reaction that successfully converts carbon dioxide into methane with a purity of 99%.

Although such conversions have been achieved before, the previous attempts have many drawbacks, such as the need for rare and expensive materials to produce chemical reactions, or the fact that the resulting fuel is not as easy to use as methane.

The authors of the paper conclude that storing solar energy in methane gas can provide more energy per unit mass of material than ordinary batteries. In the future, optimizing the conversion process is still possible, and the current findings also make people more aware of the various elements needed to strengthen this performance.
