(1) Starting Stage
Before 1980: Simple product structure, limited functions
Prior to the 1980s, China's gas industry was still in its early stages of development. The use of urban gas was very limited, with only about 10% of people having access to it. Rural areas had almost no gas usage at all. Gas stoves were in their infancy, and their design was basic, with a single function.
At that time, gas appliances were mostly simple stoves made of cast iron, with minimal features. They lacked electric ignition systems, and the manufacturing process was quite primitive. The surface was usually coated or painted, but there was little innovation or variety.
(2) Development Stage
1980–1990: Improved durability and reliability
After 1980, as China opened up and the market economy began to take shape, the gas appliance industry started to grow rapidly. Foreign gas appliances entered the Chinese market, and the number of manufacturers increased significantly—from around 10 to nearly 100. The industry expanded from being dominated by state-owned companies to including collective, private, and other business models.
International brands also started to collaborate with local manufacturers, leading to improvements in both quality and appearance. Product diversity increased, and new features such as better panels, combustion systems, and ignition devices were introduced.
During this period, the panel material evolved from basic metal to cold-rolled steel with spray coatings. Burners were upgraded to cast iron with plating or zinc treatment, and electronic piezoelectric ignition became more common, improving the reliability and lifespan of gas stoves.
(3) Breakthrough Stage
1992–2006: Diverse styles and complete product lines
From 1992 onward, China's economy experienced rapid growth, and so did the gas appliance sector. The introduction of advanced foreign technologies led to major innovations in gas stove design and performance.
Gas cookers became more varied in style, safer, and more functional. Materials improved significantly—cast iron was gradually replaced by stainless steel, non-stick coatings, tempered glass, and even ceramic surfaces in recent years. Production processes became more automated, and energy efficiency and safety standards were raised.
This era also saw the rise of well-known Chinese brands like Midea, Vantage, Fire King, Shuaikang, and FOTILE, which gained popularity for their quality and innovation.
