BYD anti-market snap-in photovoltaic

The BYD Group, renowned for its IT OEM and automotive manufacturing, has quickly expanded into the photovoltaic market both domestically and internationally. According to a report by Wangneng News, BYD recently signed a 500MW photovoltaic power plant construction project with the Yulin City government in Shaanxi Province. Jiang Zhanfeng, general manager of BYD Shangluo, who attended the signing ceremony, mentioned that the project will be developed in three phases. By the end of 2013, the first phase—200MW—will be completed. Once fully operational, the total installed capacity is expected to reach 500MW, directly feeding into the local grid and selling at the national subsidy rate of 1 yuan per kWh. The project is projected to save 250,000 tons of coal annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 750,000 tons. It will also generate over 700 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. Wu Jingsheng, Senior Vice President of BYD, highlighted that Yulin’s annual solar radiation ranges from 5,500 to 6,000 MJ/m². With vast desert areas along the Great Wall, the region has immense potential for solar development, with an estimated solar capacity of up to 300GW. This strategic location, combined with long periods of sunlight and underutilized land such as deserts and saline-alkali fields, makes Yulin an ideal site for solar projects. Before this Yulin initiative, BYD had already made several key moves in the global photovoltaic sector. In August, its first rooftop solar project in Brazil was officially launched. In November, BYD supplied South Africa with 110MW of photovoltaic modules and provided components for a 0.75MW solar power station in Hokkaido. Wu Jingsheng noted that BYD Solar has established a presence in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Southeast Asia. In China, BYD participated in a national wind energy storage demonstration project in Zhangbei County, Hebei Province, in collaboration with the State Grid. The company provided 36MWh of energy storage batteries for the project, which integrates wind power, photovoltaics, energy storage, and smart transmission. "Compared to other single photovoltaic manufacturers, BYD can combine iron-storage energy storage technology with photovoltaic systems," Wu explained. "This allows us to manage grid peaks and valleys, addressing challenges in smart grid storage." Solar energy generated can be stored in BYD's "iron battery" energy stations, converting unstable solar power into stable electricity before it is fed back into the grid. Additionally, these energy stations help balance supply and demand by charging during off-peak hours and discharging during peak times. Despite significant orders in the second half of the year, BYD's financial performance in the photovoltaic sector has not been strong. The third-quarter report showed that trade restrictions in overseas markets have worsened the operating environment for domestic PV manufacturers, leading to a decline in the solar cell industry's performance compared to the previous year.
