Wallpaper cracking treatment

When it rains, you might notice that your wallpaper starts to crack, curl, or even have misaligned patterns. These issues can be frustrating, especially if you're not sure how to fix them. Let's take a closer look at what causes these problems and how you can address them.

If the pattern on your wallpaper doesn't line up properly, this is typically due to improper installation. According to standard wallpaper installation guidelines, mismatched patterns are considered a major issue in terms of quality. Since fixing this after the fact is often difficult, it’s best to contact the manufacturer and request a free reapplication. This way, you can ensure the job is done correctly from the start.

Curling is another common problem, usually caused by either weak adhesive or not enough glue being used during installation. To fix this, you can try reapplying the adhesive. Mix the wallpaper paste according to the instructions, apply it to the back of the wallpaper, let it sit for 3–5 minutes, and then carefully reattach it to the wall. This should help it adhere more securely and prevent further curling.

Cracking is often the result of the wallpaper shrinking as it dries. If the wallpaper was cut improperly during installation, it may pull away from the wall, revealing the surface underneath. This issue is related to the skill level of the installer. If the seams weren’t pressed tightly enough during application, they can loosen over time. Remember, wallpaper made from wood pulp has natural expansion and contraction properties, so some movement is normal. However, proper technique during installation can minimize this effect.

Fixing cracked wallpaper is generally easier than the other two issues. You can try using a damp cloth to gently soak the seam for about 10 minutes. Then, use the edge of a wallpaper knife to lift the paper slightly and see if the edges can be reconnected. If this doesn’t work, you can try soaking the area again for 10 minutes. However, if the surface of the wallpaper is metallic, water exposure can cause it to lose its shine or darken, which can damage the appearance. In such cases, it’s safer to leave it to the professionals or contact the manufacturer for assistance.

Another issue homeowners often face is glue stains. These appear as dark spots on the wallpaper, especially when viewed at an angle. If you notice blackened areas, it means excess glue has seeped through the surface, covering the decorative parts and ruining the look. To avoid this, make sure the installer uses the right amount of adhesive and wipes off any excess immediately after applying it.
