[Technology] Classification of Heat Treatment Processes for Cast Copper Alloy Castings

Copper alloys typically have a relatively simple heat treatment process. Most cast copper alloys cannot be strengthened through heat treatment and are used in their as-cast condition. However, a few types of cast copper alloys benefit from heat treatment, such as bronze, chromium bronze, silicon bronze, and certain high-copper alloys that are specifically designed for heat treatment. Additionally, aluminum bronzes containing more than 9.4% aluminum (ω(Al) ≥ 9.4%) can significantly improve their mechanical properties, especially corrosion resistance, after appropriate heat treatment. The heat treatment process for cast copper alloys generally includes the following steps: 1. Stress relief annealing: This is performed to reduce internal stresses that occur during casting or welding. It helps prevent cracking and distortion in the final product. 2. Strengthening heat treatment: This involves solution treatment followed by aging. The goal is to enhance the alloy's physical and mechanical properties, as well as its resistance to corrosion. 3. Heat treatment to eliminate casting defects: For example, when cast tin bronze is heated to a temperature between 400°C and 500°C, the β-phase present between α dendrites diffuses into the α phase. This diffusion causes the alloy to expand slightly, which helps to close up microscopic shrinkage cavities and improve the material’s pressure resistance and overall integrity. These processes are crucial in optimizing the performance of copper alloys, especially in applications where strength, durability, and corrosion resistance are essential. Understanding the right heat treatment method for each type of copper alloy ensures better quality and longer service life.
