Soft packaging consumer demand is a trend

As the home improvement industry continues to grow, the demand for soft furnishings has become a significant trend in the consumer market. Homeowners are no longer just focused on structural elements but are increasingly interested in creating a harmonious and stylish living environment. "Curtains are one of the most essential components of soft decoration. Today’s consumers have embraced a wide range of soft accessories, such as decorative paintings, ceramics, indoor plants, lighting, and ornaments, making the soft furnishings market more vibrant than ever," an industry expert noted. In cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, the soft packaging sector has surpassed traditional hard-mounting in terms of popularity, with the market continuously expanding. As soft design gains traction, it is evolving beyond just selling individual products. Instead, it now emphasizes comprehensive space design, offering greater flexibility and personalization. This shift not only enhances visual appeal but also creates a more immersive and comfortable living experience for homeowners. With the rising interest in soft furnishings, investors are taking notice. A representative from Red Star Meikailong International Home Furnishing Chain mentioned that many homeowners focus more on structural elements during renovation, often overlooking the soft-packing aspect. However, this segment is gradually gaining attention. He pointed out that most soft furnishings are considered non-essential items, such as decorative pieces, art, or even cozy sofas. In a saturated furniture and building materials market, stores are looking to tap into this growing niche. During a recent visit to major home building materials stores, reporters observed that the soft-packing areas—such as curtains, wallpapers, and decor—were far more crowded than the furniture sections. Both large hypermarkets and small specialty shops specializing in soft goods are experiencing increased foot traffic. At a ceramic shop near Gaosheng Bridge in Chengdu, Mr. Zhang, the owner, is constantly searching for new foreign trade ceramic products. “Our designs are modern and unique, and we have a steady flow of customers,” he said. Over the past three years, he has noticed a growing interest in home decoration, especially in the last year. To meet the demand, he plans to open another store in the western part of the city. While the Chengdu soft furnishings market is still somewhat fragmented, it's showing signs of growth. Major department stores like Pacific and Ito Yokado, as well as home furnishing chains like Red Star Macalline and Fosun Summi, now feature soft decoration sections. The newly opened Chengdu Arts Exhibition Center is also contributing to the development of the market. Although it's still in its early stages, the market is expected to mature over time. The trend is shifting from department stores to dedicated home stores and specialized soft decoration shops. This evolution reflects the changing dynamics of the soft packaging consumer market. According to a manager at the Chengdu Arts Exhibition Center, soft design first gained popularity in hotels, where it was used to create elegant and inviting spaces. In the past, ordinary consumers didn’t pay much attention to soft furnishings. For example, a curtain in an older residential area might simply be basic drapery. However, with the rapid development of the real estate market, more people are becoming aware of the importance of soft installation. As living standards and aesthetic preferences improve, the main consumers of soft furnishings are now younger generations—those born after the 1980s and 1990s. These individuals value quality of life and personal style, and the fast-paced lifestyle has made them seek comfort and aesthetics at home.
