Wheel bearings are critical components in a vehicle, responsible for supporting the weight of the car and enabling smooth rotation of the wheels. They experience significant stress during driving, especially when the vehicle is in motion or turning. If a wheel bearing fails, it can lead to unusual noises, excessive heat, and even loss of control, particularly with front-wheel bearings. Therefore, regular inspection and maintenance of wheel bearings are essential to ensure safety and performance.
### 1. Inspecting the Hub Bearing
- **Checking Tightness**: First, lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with safety stands. Then, manually rotate the wheel to check for smooth movement and any abnormal sounds.
- **Testing Movement**: For smaller vehicles, grasp the tire from the top and bottom and pull it back and forth. A normal bearing should feel firm without looseness or resistance. If it feels loose or makes noise, it may be damaged.
- **Checking Brakes**: While inspecting the hub bearing, also examine the brake system. Oil leaks inside the tire could indicate a faulty brake cylinder or hose, which should be repaired immediately.
### 2. Maintaining the Hub Bearing
Before disassembling the hub, ensure the vehicle is safely parked and secured. Follow these steps:
- Remove the hub cap and dust cover.
- Loosen and remove the wheel nuts and tire carefully to avoid damaging the threads.
- If the vehicle has disc brakes, remove the brake caliper first. Use pliers to take off the lock ring or pin.
- Remove the wheel hub using a specialized tool.
- Clean the old grease from the bearing, journal, and hub cavity. Wipe everything thoroughly with a cloth.
- Inspect the bearing and race for cracks, wear, or damage. Replace if necessary.
- Check the fit between the bearing and the journal. The clearance should not exceed 0.1 mm. If it does, replace the bearing.
- Apply fresh grease to the inner bearing and place it back into the hub.
- Fill the bearing until grease comes out from the other side. Apply a thin layer of grease inside the hub and on the shaft cap for rust protection.
- Reinstall the hub, outer bearing, and adjust the nut by hand before tightening it with the proper torque.
- After tightening, turn the wheel several times to ensure smooth operation and check for any axial play.
- Finally, reattach the hub cap, dust cover, tire, and securing nuts.
After the adjustment, drive the vehicle for about 10 km and then check the hub temperature. If it feels too hot, the bearing may be too tight and needs readjustment.
