Ms. Guan, originally from Jiangxi, was on her way back to her hometown with two colleagues before the company's annual vacation. The boss had arranged for the company’s van to transport them, which seemed like a thoughtful gesture at first. However, what should have been a routine trip turned into a painful accident that left Ms. Guan hospitalized with a head injury.
The incident occurred on Kenting Road, a stretch known for its icy conditions during winter. The group was traveling from north to south via the Shida Expressway when they reached this section of road. Kenting Road is close to the expressway and includes a railway culvert that is approximately 60 meters long. It was here that the accident happened.
"The van shook violently, swayed left and right several times, and then flipped over, sliding for a short distance," Ms. Guan later described. Fortunately, all occupants were wearing seatbelts, which prevented more severe injuries. "Otherwise, we might have rolled out of the vehicle—this could have been much worse," she said.
The cause of the accident was attributed to ice forming on the surface of the culvert. In addition to Ms. Guan's van, three other small vehicles also lost control in the same area. However, only Ms. Guan sustained injuries. According to the doctors, after a day or two of observation, she will be able to leave the hospital and resume normal activities.
At the scene, reporters noticed that the 60-meter stretch of road lies beneath a railway bridge, where sunlight barely reaches. Water pipes along the bridge drain directly into the green areas beside the road, keeping the area consistently wet. With temperatures dropping below zero the previous night, the conditions were ideal for ice formation, making the road extremely dangerous.
