Pigment-sensitized solar cells manufactured using highly durable dyes have achieved high conversion efficiency

Dye-sensitized solar cells manufactured using highly durable pigments achieve 11.9% conversion efficiency

Fujifilm has developed dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells that have improved durability. At the "12th International Nanotechnology Exhibition" (nano tech 2013), which is being held at Tokyo's Ariake International Convention and Exhibition Center, the company has disclosed the performance specifications of solar cells using newly developed pigments.

The currently used pigment "Black Dye" has a problem of low durability. The use of Fujifilm's newly developed pigment-produced solar cells, after being left in the environment at a temperature of 85°C and a humidity of 85% for 1,000 hours, reduced the conversion efficiency by less than 10%.

In addition to durability, the pigments developed by Fujifilm have also made many improvements in improving conversion efficiency. For example, the current value is increased by enhancing the absorption of light at the long-wave end, and the voltage value is increased by suppressing the dark current.

In fact, Sharp's dye-sensitized solar cells manufactured using this dyestuff achieved 11.9% of the world's highest conversion efficiency. Sharp's prototype has a cell area of 1.00cm2, a short circuit current of 22.58mA, an open circuit voltage of 0.744V, and a fill factor of 71.2%. The conversion efficiency was measured by the Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute. In the future, in order to further improve the conversion efficiency, Fujifilm will continue to improve so that it can absorb more light at long wavelengths.
