Germany's Graz University of Technology develops robot fast charging system

Researchers at the Technical University of Graz in Germany collaborated with industry partners to develop a fast charging system for electric vehicles controlled by robots. The special feature of this system is that it allows vehicles in different parking positions to be charged in series.

Thanks to the camera system, robots using the Conductive Combined Charging System (CCS) can find the charging plug of the electric vehicle and then help the electric vehicle to charge automatically.

Bernhard Walzel, who is in charge of the project at the Technical University of Graz, explained: "This is our first robot-based charging station that can automatically charge cars one by one, and the cars do not need special adjustments to adapt to this technology. With clever Camera technology, the robot can identify the vehicle's charging socket, so it can automatically set different parameters, and the car can be driven into the charging station one by one to charge. In addition, it can also solve the problem of vehicle positioning, even if the car is parked in the wrong place, the system Works too. "

According to the Graz University of Technology, the charging system is a "complex electromechanical system composed of sensors, robot kinematics and robot control elements." In addition, the system can also work in different light, that is to say indoor and Works outdoors.

The system was developed by a number of partners, including the research team of the University of Graz and colleagues from the Institute of Computer Graphics and Vision of the University of Graz, as well as the automation of BMW, Magna Steyr, and Linz, Austria Experts Coburg (KEBA) and the Austrian Institute of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK) in Vienna.

The concept of developing an automatic charging system is not new. Last year, Volkswagen and KUKA launched a similar project in cooperation. This project also focuses on the automation of the charging process. Robots are used in both of the above projects to address the requirements for flexible charging.
