BYD, a well-known company in IT OEM and automotive manufacturing, is rapidly expanding its presence in the global photovoltaic market. According to Wangneng News, BYD recently signed a 500MW solar power plant construction project with the Yulin City government in Shaanxi Province. The project will be implemented in three phases, with the first 200MW expected to be completed by the end of 2013. Once fully operational, the plant will generate over 700 million kWh annually, directly feeding into the local grid and benefiting from the national subsidy rate of 1 yuan per kWh.
The project is anticipated to save approximately 250,000 tons of coal each year and cut carbon dioxide emissions by around 750,000 tons compared to traditional thermal power. Wu Jingsheng, Senior Vice President of BYD, highlighted that Yulin's high annual solar radiation—between 5,500 and 6,000 MJ/m²—and its vast desert areas along the Great Wall make it an ideal location for large-scale solar development. He noted that the region could support up to 300GW of solar capacity.
Before this Yulin project, BYD had already made significant moves in the PV sector both domestically and internationally. In August, the company launched its first rooftop solar project in Brazil. By November, it had supplied 110MW of photovoltaic modules to South Africa and provided components for a 0.75MW solar plant in Hokkaido, Japan. BYD Solar has now expanded its overseas sales to Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
In China, BYD participated in the Zhangbei County demonstration project, which integrates wind power, solar energy, energy storage, and smart transmission. The company provided 36MWh of energy storage batteries for the initiative. Wu Jingsheng explained that BYD’s unique advantage lies in combining iron-based energy storage technology with photovoltaics. This allows the company to manage grid fluctuations, stabilize solar energy output, and optimize electricity usage through peak shaving and valley filling. During low-demand periods, excess energy is stored, and during peak times, it is discharged back into the grid, improving overall efficiency.
Despite strong order growth in the second half of the year, BYD’s financial performance in the solar sector has been challenging. The third-quarter report revealed that trade restrictions in some overseas markets have worsened the operating environment for Chinese PV manufacturers, leading to a decline in the solar cell industry’s performance. However, BYD remains committed to its long-term strategy in renewable energy, focusing on innovation and sustainability to drive future growth.
