Cleaning
1. Cotton Fabric:
When washing cotton fabrics, always use a mild detergent that doesn’t contain bleach or harsh chemicals. I personally recommend using a natural rice-based detergent, which is gentle and effective. Make sure to dissolve the detergent fully in water before adding the fabric. Soak the cotton for no more than 30 minutes, and keep the water temperature below 30°C. Always separate light and dark fabrics to prevent color bleeding.
Avoid soaking bedding for too long, as this can cause fading. Use a neutral, gentle detergent instead of bleach, and never pour the powder directly onto the fabric. Always mix it with water first. When drying, avoid direct sunlight. Turn the bedding inside out and hang it in a cool, well-ventilated area. Always check the care label before washing any fabric to ensure proper maintenance and longevity.
2. Silk, Soybean Fiber, and Other Delicate Fabrics:
For silk, soybean fiber, or similar materials, wash at room temperature using a special silk detergent. Avoid detergents with enzymes, as they can damage the fibers. I find Blue Moon’s silk detergent works very well. Adding a small amount of white vinegar during washing helps enhance the fabric's shine. Never wring or dry these fabrics in the sun. Instead, air dry them in a shaded, well-ventilated area, and use low heat when ironing.
3. Wool and Cashmere:
These delicate fabrics should also be washed at room temperature. Use a mild, enzyme-free detergent, and avoid prolonged soaking. Dry cleaning is often recommended, but if hand-washing, use a gentle motion. Iron on medium heat only. Wool can be tricky to care for, so it's best to use a trusted brand like Amway, which offers reliable and safe cleaning products.
4. Synthetic Fabrics:
Wash synthetic materials at room temperature, and avoid using hot water, which can damage the fibers. These fabrics are usually safe for machine washing. However, avoid ironing velvet surfaces directly, as this can flatten the texture.
5. Bamboo and Silk Fabrics:
Wash these at room temperature, avoiding high-temperature water. They can be dry cleaned or gently washed by hand. Do not expose them to direct sunlight after washing. Store them in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated place. If ironing, use low heat.
6. Linen Fabric:
When washing linen, avoid rubbing or scrubbing too hard, as this can cause pilling and damage the fabric’s appearance. Handle it gently to maintain its softness and durability.
Storage
1. Fold your bedding neatly and store it in a dark, dry, and well-ventilated area. Place a few mothballs to protect against pests.
2. For wool items, avoid exposing them to direct sunlight. After washing, let them cool down before folding. Store them with insect repellent in a dry, non-compressed space. Dry cleaning is often preferred for wool.
3. Silk items should be air-dried in a cool, shaded area. Once cooled, fold them carefully and store them with insect repellent in a dry place. Avoid dry cleaning or frequent washing, as this can weaken the fabric.
4. Down jackets can be air-dried after use. Let them cool completely before folding and storing. Keep them in a dry, ventilated area with insect repellent.
5. White silk products should not be stored in wooden boxes or sealed containers, as this can cause yellowing over time. Always keep them in breathable, dry storage to preserve their quality.
