In Fengxin County, Jiangxi, a simple plastic drink bottle is being transformed into something far more valuable than just trash. While many might think the end of a plastic bottle is simply the garbage bin, in this region, it's becoming a key component in the textile industry. This innovative approach has helped establish Fengxin Industrial Park as a major player in China’s textile sector.
According to Shuai Qiming, Deputy Manager of Jiangxi Siyuanxiang Regeneration Technology Co., Ltd., waste isn’t really waste—it’s a hidden resource. “The garbage dump is actually a mine filled with ‘urban minerals.’ Up to 80% of daily waste can be recycled and reused,†he explained. Even non-degradable household waste finds its way into various industrial processes, including the production of textile raw materials.
Fengxin Industrial Park has positioned itself as both “China’s Emerging Textile Industry Base†and “China’s Textile Industry Transfer Pilot Park.†It’s not just about economic growth; it’s about transformation. The park is accelerating the adoption of new technologies and processes, aiming to upgrade traditional industries and drive sustainable development.
Circular economy plays a central role in this transformation. With 16 large-scale textile enterprises operating within the park, it has become the largest and fastest-growing textile base in Jiangxi. Among them is Siyuanxiang, the only waste polyester recycling company in the province. Since its establishment, the company has set up four collection points in Nanchang, processing 88,000 tons of waste polyester annually. It produces 6 million tons of recycled polyester fiber, ranking fifth nationally and first in East China.
Inside the factory, rows of discarded beverage bottles are cleaned, processed, and turned into high-quality polyester pellets. These are then colored and spun into premium textile products. What once was considered worthless is now a clean, white fiber that powers the textile industry.
Beyond just recycling, the project supports a full industrial chain within the park—raw materials, spinning, weaving, and dyeing. This integration attracts more textile companies to settle in Fengxin, benefiting from the proximity of suppliers and reduced costs. As engineer Xiao Chongsheng of Jiangxi Baofeng Knitting Co., Ltd. explained, 80–90% of their raw materials come from local suppliers, cutting costs by 5% and improving efficiency.
Looking ahead, the park aims to expand its textile industry further. By 2015, it plans to have 27 textile enterprises, with a front-end raw material capacity of 300,000 tons, 2.5 million spindles for spinning, 40,000 tons of weaving capacity, and 50,000 tons of printing and dyeing capability. The goal is to build a comprehensive textile system and develop Fengxin into a “Chinese Cotton Textile City.â€
This shift shows how small actions—like recycling a plastic bottle—can lead to big changes. It’s not just about sustainability; it’s about building a future where waste becomes wealth, and innovation drives progress.
