Reason for long eggplant curved fruit

Recently, some vegetable farmers have reported that long eggplants grown in greenhouses are showing a serious issue of curving. This has raised concerns among growers about the cause of this problem and how to prevent it. So, what leads to the formation of curved long eggplants?

First, physical pressure or friction during fruit development can cause curvature. When the long eggplant fruits come into contact with leaves or petioles, they may bend due to external forces. To address this, farmers should regularly inspect their crops and carefully remove any fruits that are in contact with foliage. This helps reduce mechanical stress and prevents unnecessary bending.

Secondly, improper temperature conditions can also contribute to fruit curvature. Eggplants require specific environmental conditions for proper flower bud differentiation. If the temperature inside the greenhouse is too high or too low, it can disrupt this process, leading to misshapen fruits. Farmers should maintain an optimal temperature range of around 28Â°C to support healthy growth and flower development. Ensuring adequate water and balanced fertilization will further support strong plant growth and better fruit formation.

Thirdly, weak plant growth or excessive vegetative growth can lead to curved fruits. If the plants are not vigorous enough, or if they grow too tall without proper fruit set, the fruits may develop abnormally. In such cases, it's advisable for farmers to prune some of the early fruits to redirect the plantâ€™s energy towards strengthening its overall structure. Once the plant is robust, it can better support fruit development. Additionally, managing irrigation and reducing nitrogen fertilizer use can help balance growth. Using plant growth regulators like auxin or chlormequat can also be beneficial in controlling excessive vegetative growth and promoting more uniform fruit development.

In addition, if curved fruits have already formed, farmers can apply a diluted solution of growth regulators directly to the affected areas. This technique can help correct the shape of the fruit and improve its marketability. It's important to follow proper application guidelines to avoid overuse or damage to the plant.
