French media: China's demand for luxury furniture "kills" a lot of mahogany

In a recent report, the Associated Press (AFP) highlighted how the rising demand for luxury furniture in China is driving illegal logging across Southeast Asia, particularly threatening the survival of the precious Siamese rosewood. Environmental experts warned that this surge in demand has led to widespread deforestation, cross-border corruption, and even violence in the region. As China's middle class continues to grow wealthier, there has been a sharp increase in the purchase of high-status items, including replica Ming and Qing-style furniture. A report from the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), an independent non-governmental organization, found that Chinese consumers' appetite for mahogany has drastically reduced the population of Siamese rosewood across the Mekong region. Since 2000, China has imported over $2.4 billion worth of valuable timber from the Mekong area. Criminal groups, eager to profit from the booming market, have engaged in rampant illegal logging, leaving forests barren and ecosystems devastated. Fez Doherty, an investigator with the EIA, stated: "Countries like Thailand are facing severe environmental and social damage. If urgent action isn't taken to stop this destructive trade, Siamese rosewood could disappear within just a few years." The EIA is calling on China to take stronger measures to regulate the furniture industry and reduce demand for illegally sourced wood. While the country has made some progress in combating the illegal trade of Siamese rosewood, officials admit it is still far from sufficient. With the global community increasingly aware of the environmental impact of such practices, pressure is mounting on both producers and consumers to act responsibly and protect these endangered species before it's too late.
